Many of us would like to turn it into a religion. But it isn't one. Religions have rules and protocols. You follow them and you get an "A". You feel good about yourself.
Christianity is a relationship. Christians have a relationship with God. Think about it. "A relationship with God." It's the most valuable thing a human can have. It's the ability to communicate with the same person who created the universe. Nothing could ever be more important.
How does this happen? Through Jesus. Before Jesus, mankind struggled to earn their relationship with God. Jesus came to earth. He taught us what God was like- he loved us, he fed us, he healed us. At the end of all it, he then engaged in a willing self-sacrifice.
He died on the cross. If you've seen Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" you'll never think about Jesus' death the same way again. Jesus' death was truly the most horrible death ever recorded. But Jesus death was planned to be sufficient to pay for the sins of all mankind.
With religion, you feel good about yourself because of your actions- you follow rules established by others. If you do enough things, you'll end up in Heaven.
With Christianity, you feel good about yourself because of your relationship with God. It doesn't mean you shouldn't follow the rules. But your reason for doing so is different- to please God. And your entry into Heaven is based simply on your faith in Jesus. No rules. No rituals. No attendance. You can't earn it. God offered it with Jesus. You accept it by faith in Jesus. And then you live your life in gratitude to Him.
Not for you. For Him.
