God loves all of us, no matter what we have done. Jesus didn’t hang out with squeaky clean people. He surrounded himself with the castoffs of Jewish society- the tax collectors, adulterers and sinners. All of these people had one thing in common. They knew they were wrong and sorry for it. They believed that only Jesus could make it right. Squeaky clean Christianity is a myth. We’ve all sinned. We’ve all done what we knew was wrong. You may be thinking that you’re not good enough for Christianity. No one is. That’s the point. God loves us anyway. He loves me. He loves you.
The secret to real and lasting Christian growth is realizing that only God can change us. That realization causes us to trust Him to change us and allow Him to change us, not matter what else is happening in our lives. If we are willing to wait on Him, we will see the change. As we see this change, our faith is increased, which allows us to trust in Him even more. Eventually, we get to the emotional and spiritual point where we can trust in Him for everything, everyday. Only then can we become what God wants us to be and experience the life that he wants us to have.
This is the faith walk. We believe that God is in control. We believe that He will make everything work for good for His followers. We understand that our lives on this earth are a mere snapshot, when compared to eternity. Then, we step out in that faith onto life’s journey. Each and every step requires a bit more faith. Each successful step reinforces their faith. On our Christian journey, we look back and see that God has continued to walk with us, and we become less afraid to take that next step.
If we live our Christian lives in any other way, we will ride a spiritual and emotional roller coaster. We will have highs when good things happen to us, and lows when bad things happen. When we feel bad, we are more likely to do bad things that make us feel better. We become guided by our emotions rather than by God. This can delay or derail our Christian growth.
